About Department

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in English Language at IUK encompasses a variety of academic and career goals (e.g., English literature; Applied Linguistic. Committed to graduating professional and knowledgeable graduates in the English language to meet the needs of the Kuwait market and serve different domains such as translation, media, journalism, and banking. The department's main objective is to maintain high-quality levels of instruction and research and to reach excellence in teaching and learning. Students will have the opportunity to choose a concentration and consult with the program chair/advisors as soon as possible. Students should select their concentration during the sophomore year and no later than completing 60 credit hours

The  department's main goals emphasize on:

  1. Offering a Bachelor's degree of Arts in English Language, with concentrations in English Literature and Applied Linguistics for students seeking personal and professional careers in these domains.
  2. Providing an academic environment that fosters critical thinking, innovation, and creativity.
  3. Providing a solid foundation for instruction in the English language at International University of Kuwait that enables all students to handle their courses efficiently and effectively.

 

  • Degree Requirements

The English major students must complete all the following 120 credit hours  in order to complete their Bachelor of Arts degree in English as follows:

  1. University Core Courses (General Education)             42 credit hours
  2. College of Arts requirements           24 credit hours
  3. Major Requirements (compulsory + Concentration) 48 credit hours
  4. Free electives 6 credit hours

English Language: Major Requirements (48 credit hours)

Students seeking the Bachelor of Arts’ degree in English Language must complete the 48 credits of major requirements, as follows:

  • Compulsory courses (27 credits hours)
  • Major Concentration Courses (21 credit hours)
    • Literature Concentration
    • Applied Linguistics Concentration

Students majoring in the English Language with a concentration in literature must complete all university and college requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree. Before enrolling in advanced courses in English, students must complete the six-hour University Core requirement in Communication (ENGL 100 and ENGL 110 or equivalents). In addition to the university and college requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree, majors seeking a concentration in literature must complete 21 advanced semester hours in English (300- and 400-level courses), to include:
